Types of travel
The creation of the world phenomena especially the creation of humans is purposeful. Man is not created in vain and his life path is regulated and built on calculated scientific principles
The creation of the world phenomena especially the creation of humans is purposeful. Man is not created in vain and his life path is regulated and built on calculated scientific principles. This purpose runs in different sectors and areas of human life and covers all aspects of his life. Travel is of the most fundamental human needs located in his deepest layers of life and thus inevitable. Accordingly, human travel is purposeful and the journey of humans is purposeful and has a constructive, guiding, and developmental role considered both in Quran and traditions. Travel and tourism can be divided according to different criteria to different forms, including travel division based on incentives, based on religious orders, and based on destination and place.
By contemplating on Quran verses, it is understood that those three issues of motivation, religious orders, and place in expressing types of travel are included and sayings of the Ahlul-Bayt have expressed them in details as well. There is a typology of travels:
One) Worship and Pilgrimage Trips
In verses and traditions, many cases of worship and pilgrimage trips are mentioned:
The First Type: Hajj
Hajj is cutting off from the people towards God. Going on a trip to Sacred Baitullah's Hajj is trying to go to God's house to do rituals and Haji is the person whose destination and purpose is the pilgrimage of God's house. In Islam, the Hajj is proposed because of its profound impact on people's faith, and it is so much important and role-playing that religion stability is tied to fulfilling this obligation. Imam Sadiq (A.S.) said:
لَا یَزَالُ الدِّینُ قَائِماً مَا قَامَتِ‏ الْکَعْبَة؛
Until the Kaaba is there, Islam stands as well
The word Hajj is used 11 times in Quran. Hajj pilgrimage has countless blessings and effects and in addition to material outcomes, has deep spiritual achievements for the pilgrim himself. For this reason, Islam has always called on Muslims to aspire to have this in mind and when the arrangements of this invaluable  travel is provided, he starts going to God's house:
وَأَذِّنْ فِی النَّاسِ بِالْحَجِّ یَأْتُوکَ رِجَالاً وَعَلَى کُلِّ ضَامِرٍ یَأْتِینَ مِنْ کُلِّ فَجٍّ عَمِیقٍ
“And proclaim the Pilgrimage among men: they will come to thee on foot and [mounted] on every kind of camel, lean on account of journeys through deep and
distant mountain highways”.
Hajj has different dimensions: personal, social, physical, and spiritual. This has caused Hajj to be a comprehensive and concrete journey whose material and spiritual gains are clear and evident in pilgrims of Hajj:
لِیَشْهَدُوا مَنَافِعَ لَهُمْ وَیَذْکُرُوا اسْمَ اللهِ فِی أَیَّامٍ مَعْلُومَاتٍ؛
“That they may witness the benefits [provided] for them, and celebrate the name of Allah, through the Days appointed, over the cattle which He has provided for them [for sacrifice]: then eat ye thereof and feed the distressed ones in want”.
Hajj is its own etiquette and rules which have made it distinct from other trips, and has beneficial results.
Forgiveness of sins, removing poverty, acceptance to be at the divine presence, and the answering to one’s prayers are some of the results of this glorious trip.
The Second Type: Visiting the Shrines of the Saints of God
Of the very virtuous and religious trips are pilgrimages and visiting the pure tombs of the prophets, the Imams, great figures, religious scholars, martyrs and the righteous people.
In Islamic culture, the prophets and Imams have spiritual presence among people even after their death and witness people’s actions:
وَ لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِینَ قُتِلُوا فِی سَبِیلِ اللهِ أَمْوَاتاً بَلْ أَحْیَاءٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ یُرْزَقُونَ * فَرِحِینَ بِمَا آتَاهُمُ اللهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ وَ یَسْتَبْشِرُونَ بِالَّذِینَ لَمْ یَلْحَقُوا بِهِمْ مِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ أَلَّا خَوْفٌ عَلَیْهِمْ وَ لَا هُمْ یَحْزَنُونَ؛
“Think not of those who are slain in Allah's way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord; They rejoice in the bounty provided by Allah: And with regard to those left behind, who have not yet joined them [in their bliss], the [Martyrs] glory in the fact that on them is no fear, nor have they [cause to] grieve.”
In addition to Quran, many traditions point to the fact that the holy prophet (P.B.U.H.), Imams, martyrs, and the righteous are alive, hear our words and our prayers, and are able to meet our needs. Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) said:
“Anyone who visits my grave, my intercession will be revealed to him. The one who visits me after death; it is as if he visited me when I was alive.”
Visiting the graves of Prophets and Imams has creates a spiritual connection with those great people, and adds to the health of the community, and constantly adds to the society’s piety and leads everyone towards piety. In addition to reinforcing and lifting the pilgrim’s spirit, visiting the shrines of Imams presents their behavioral models and examples before him and gives him the reward for the Hereafter. Imam Reza (A.S.) said:
“Each Imam has covenant on the neck of his friends and followers. This covenant is to never cut and reaches its fullest capacity when people visit the tombs of their Imams (A.S.).”
The Third type: Visiting
One of the religious and worshipping duties of every Muslim is visiting the parents and relatives. In Islamic culture, visiting the relatives is emphasized and leaving it is severely criticized. The Infallibles have stressed the duty of visiting the relatives so much that even at least by saying hello. Prophet (P.B.U.H.) has said:
“To all my people, to those present and absent, even those in the womb of mothers or back of their fathers, I recommend to have a relationship with their relatives, although they are so far that it takes them a year. Such an action is a sign of faith and submission.”
Imam Ali (A.S.) has also said:
“For kindness to parents pass over the course of two years, be kind to them, have a trip of one year to visit relatives and so carry out your divine obligation.”
One of the most obvious pilgrim trips is the trip to visit relatives, especially parents. By relationship with relatives, in addition to having the joy and freshness of spirit, one gets the strengthening of will, gets away from selfishness and pride, and countless heavenly rewards.
The Fourth Type: Jihad
Jihad is one of the important Islamic duties which are not only one’s religious duty and obligation but also a strong factor to save the religion. Many verses in Quran refer to the necessity and importance of Jihad and Mujahedeen consider great value for it so much as it swear to their horses’ hooves:
وَالْعَادِیَاتِ ضَبْحاً * فَالْمُورِیَاتِ قَدْحاً؛
“By the [Steeds] that run, with panting {breath}; And strike sparks of fire”
Quran verses about Jihad can be divided into five categories:
● Verses ordering financial and life Jihad in Allah's way
● Verses that encourage Muslims to Jihad and fight for the believers
● Verses that blamed those who reneged from Jihad 
● Verses that state defense preparedness and being equipped with adequate equipment needed for the war
● The verses that count attributes and spiritual values and rewards of Jihadists of the God's way: eternal life with God, the friendship of Allah, real hope of the great mercy of God, the elation of status and the Lord, guided in the right way, giving priority to Mujahidin than quitters, having the help of Allah and constancy in religion and prayer, charity, enjoining good and forbidding wrong.
The tradition of infallibles also expresses Jihad in the path of God. They have always been victorious in campaign of ordinary Jihad and the great Jihad. Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) introduces Islamic Jihad in the cause of Allah journey and says:
إِنَّ سِیاحَةَ أُمَّتِی الْجِهَادُ فِی سَبِیلِ اللهِ؛
“Surely, my nation's tour is like Jihad in the way of Allah”
Therefore, Jihad trips are of worship trips that cause proximity to God, eternal happiness, mental health, robustness, and stability of the Islamic nation and religion, Muslim dignity, and authority.
The Fifth Type: (Hijrat) Immigration
Immigration is the most famous trip among Muslims and in the Islamic history. Historic journey of Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H.) and his companions from Mecca to Yathrib is famous for an Islamic ruling. Human history is full of important and constructive immigrations showing the lives of prophets, migration is a divine tradition, and verses in Quran reflect the migration of prophets and true believers. In several verses of Quran, immigration goes along with the word Jihad and migrants are seen as devoted and valued people.
Rebukes and addresses by Quran have clarified the possibility of migration to Muslims and all human beings have the duty to protect the religion and faith in a corrupt and unfavorable environment and leave and travel to another country:
إِنَّ الَّذِینَ تَوَفَّاهُمُ الْمَلآئِکَةُ ظَالِمِی أَنْفُسِهِمْ قَالُواْ فِیمَ کُنتُمْ قَالُواْ کُنَّا مُسْتَضْعَفِینَ فِی الأَرْضِ قَالُواْ أَلَمْ تَکُنْ أَرْضُ اللهِ وَاسِعَةً فَتُهَاجِرُواْ فِیهَا فَأُوْلَـئِکَ مَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ وَسَاءَتْ مَصِیراً؛
“When angels take the souls of those who die in sin against their souls, they say: "In what [plight] Were ye?" They reply: "Weak and oppressed Were we in the earth." They say: "Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to move yourselves away [From evil]?" Such men will find their abode in Hell,- What an evil refuge!” 
Hope for the mercy of Allah, forgiveness of sins, gaining high positions is of great features expressed for immigrants in the way of Allah.
Two) Scientific Trips
Islam has mandated seeking knowledge for Muslims and has considered learning knowledge and education as the pillars of human happiness. The Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) has said:
طَلَبُ‏ الْعِلْمِ‏ فَرِیضَةٌ عَلَى کُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ أَلَا وَ إِنَّ اللهَ یُحِبُّ بُغَاةَ الْعِلْم‏؛
“The pursuit of knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim, be aware that God loves seekers of knowledge”
According to Islamic tradition, wisdom, and knowledge are the believer's lost treasure. In holy Quran, attention to scientific knowledge and travel is taken into consideration to benefit from the valuable scientific results and achievements so to reform individuals and their society:
وَمَا کَانَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لِیَنفِرُواْ کَآفَّةً فَلَوْلَا نَفَرَ مِن کُلِّ فِرْقَةٍ مِّنْهُمْ طَآئِفَةٌ لِّیَتَفَقَّهُواْ فِی الدِّینِ وَلِیُنذِرُواْ قَوْمَهُمْ إِذَا رَجَعُواْ إِلَیْهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ یَحْذَرُونَ؛
“Nor should the Believers all go forth together: if a contingent from every expedition remained behind, they could devote themselves to studies in religion, and admonish the people when they return to them,- that thus they [may learn] to guard themselves [against evil]”
The pursuit of knowledge is not limited to a certain period, but it is necessary for Muslims to spend all their lives for acquisition of knowledge and fight ignorance. Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) said:
طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ فَرِیضَةٌ عَلَى کُلِّ حَالٍ؛
Learning science is necessary under any circumstances.
It is also quoted from him:
اطْلُبُوا الْعِلْمَ‏ مِنَ‏ الْمَهْدِ إِلَى اللَّحْد؛
Acquire knowledge from cradle to grave
On the other hand, scientific expedition is not limited to the same location, but knowledge seekers should seek it as far as they can:
اطْلُبُوا الْعِلْمَ وَ لَوْ بِالصِّینِ؛
Acquire knowledge even in places so far as China.
Obviously, reaching knowledge and strengthening capacities and meeting divine goals can be achieved only through journeys. Therefore, one should start travel and accept hardship of the way to achieve the wealth of knowledge that is needed by the community.
Travel makes the exchange of ideas and knowledge and their transfer and provides the chance for fullest human development and paves the ground for human excellence.
Three) Missionary Trips
Propaganda means to inform, warn, evangelize, and deliver the news. Due to their spirit and benefactor nature and after they find facts, humans want to spread ideas throughout the world. Undoubtedly, travelling is one of the best ways to deliver the message of truth.
Islam and religion development was performed further by the trips of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) and his companions. Prophet (P.B.U.H.) has even conveyed some divine messages in his sensitive and decisive trips. He, on the religious political journey of Farewell Pilgrimage, was assigned by God to communicate the succession of Imam Ali (A.S.) to Muslims:
بَلِّغْ مَا أُنزِلَ إِلَیْکَ مِن رَّبِّکَ وَإِن لَّمْ تَفْعَلْ فَمَا بَلَّغْتَ رِسَالَتَهُ وَاللهُ یَعْصِمُکَ مِنَ النَّاسِ إِنَّ اللهَ لاَ یَهْدِی الْقَوْمَ الْکَافِرِینَ؛
“O Messenger! Proclaim the (message) which hath been sent to thee from thy Lord. If thou didst not, thou wouldst not have fulfilled and proclaimed His mission. And Allah will defend thee from men (who mean mischief). For Allah guideth not those who reject Faith”
The presence of an informer among people has a direct impact on the beliefs and opinions of the people. Accordingly, the missionary journey has always been the emphasis of Islam and Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) Imams, preachers, and those who recite Quran were sent to different parts of the Islamic country. Sending Muadh ibn Jabal to Yemen, Mothaab Umair to Medina and others to Ethiopia by Imam Ali (A.S.) are the evidence of this claim.
Four) Business Trips
Earning a living is not possible only in a person’s place of residence, because each area has a special talent and resources that alone cannot meet the needs of human life. They must travel to meet their living needs. Earning money, providing subsistence, and trade helped humans overcome the bottlenecks of human life and improve their livelihoods by moving from their place of residence to other places that cater their needs and the Lord has paved the ground for these trips with calm earth and subduing the earth and conquering it for them. In Islamic culture, trade and business are sacred. Religious leaders have emphasized on the efforts and economic independence so that the Muslim community retains its dignity and does not go under the influence of oppressive foreigners:
الَّذِینَ یَتَرَبَّصُونَ بِکُمْ فَإِن کاَنَ لَکُمْ فَتْحٌ مِّنَ اللهِ قَالُواْ أَ لَمْ نَکُن مَّعَکُمْ وَ إِن کاَنَ لِلْکَافِرِینَ نَصِیبٌ قَالُواْ أَ لَمْ نَسْتَحْوِذْ عَلَیْکُمْ وَ نَمْنَعْکُم مِّنَ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ  فَاللهُ یحَکُمُ بَیْنَکُمْ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَةِ  وَ لَن یجَعَلَ اللهُ لِلْکَافِرِینَ عَلىَ المْؤْمِنِینَ سَبِیلاً؛
“These are the ones who wait and watch about you: if ye do gain a victory from Allah, they say: "Were we not with you?"- but if the unbelievers gain a success, they say [to them]: "Did we not gain an advantage over you, and did we not guard you from the believers?" but Allah will judge between you on the Day of Judgment. And never will Allah grant to the unbelievers a way [to triumphs over the believers. And God has never set a way for [losses] of believers, for [authority] of non-believers.”
The importance of a healthy business with the aim of serving the people and families is known as worship and praised as a divine cause:
 “Someone who works for the welfare of his family is like the person taking part in Jihad in the path of Allah”- “Sadugh- V. 3- P. 168)
Imam Ali (A.S.) says:
“Do business so Allah shall send down to you his blessings. We heard from the Messenger of Allah (P.B.U.H.) said human’s sustenance has ten components, nine of which are in business and one in other things.” 
Five) Historical Trips
Islam is a comprehensive religion which pays full attention to all man's natural needs and has programs and procedures indicated for all overt and hidden aspects of human life and all his physical and psychological needs in various dimensions. Joy, happiness and leisure are among spiritual needs of human nature that play a role in many aspects of human life. Islam pays a deep and real attention to all aspects of human life, recommends happiness and high spirits as elements necessary for a successful life and for the human beings.
To prove the attention of religion to this need, it is enough to take  look at narrative books, there is an argument called "Bring Happiness" and those who bring about the happiness to God's creatures have been praised. The Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) says:
أَنَّ فِی الجَنَّةِ دَاراً یُقَالُ لَهُ دَارُ الفَرَحِ لَایَدخُلُهَا إِلَّا مَنْ فَرَّحَ الصِّبْیَانَ؛
“Heaven is a place called rejoice house, no one goes into the house unless, he has created joy for children” (Motaghi Hendi- V. 3- P. 170)
Sightseeing in entertainment venues and seeing the land is one way of refreshment of body and provides vitality and freshness for the human body and soul. It is said that Imams sometimes walked to places with good climate to calm their spirits. 
Amr Bin Haris says, “I saw Imam Sadiq (A.S.) going to the house of his brother, Badallah Mohammed, I asked for the reason, Imam replied: ‘For joy and some rest’”
Imam Reza (A.S.) went to entertainment venues with his companions. It is clear that excursions that Imams have recommended are far from any frivolous extravagance and forbidden acts. Imam Ali (A.S.) has said:
لَیْسَ‏ لِلْعَاقِلِ‏ أَنْ‏ یَکُونَ‏ شَاخِصاً إِلَّا فِی ثَلَاثَةٍ مَرَمَّةٍ لِمَعَاشٍ أَوْ خُطْوَةٍ لِمَعَادٍ أَوْ لَذَّةٍ فِی غَیْرِ مُحَرَّمٍ؛
“The wise do not travel except in three cases: to organize their livelihood, stepping in to reform the Hereafter, and to have enjoyment and recreation”
So in nature-this divine book- many facts are manifested. So walking into the nature for rest and fun, in addition to its role in the development of science, calms the tired spirit of humans as a sign of God and provides the field for humans’ spiritual development and growth.
