Imam Reza’s (A.S.) Recommendation for Nutrition in Spring
With the start of Iranian New Year and spring, it is necessary to pay special attention to Imams (P.B.U.T) helpful recommendations on health, especially those of Imam Reza’s (A.S.) about the nutritional principles in this season in order to spend a season away from diseases.

According to Islamic traditions, medical and Imams’ health advice, nutrition in every season must be in accordance with the weather of that season, so that the body’s system is not disrupted and that doesn’t lead to a disease. In the same way, paying attention to Imam Reza’s (A.S.) recommendations for spring helps to maintain health and prevents problems and diseases.
Nutrition quality and type of physical activity is important in spring. Based on physicians and experts in traditional medicine, spring has a warm and wet weather and it adjusts moisture remained from winter in the body. Because of low activity in winter and also taking warm and nutritious foods lot of material are deposited in the human body which should be burnt in spring and the beginning of hot seasons.
Spring dishes, light, easily digestible and mild
The Encyclopedia of Islamic Medical Narratives, Volume 1, Page 99 there is a tradition by Imam Reza (A.S.) saying: change your diet from Fatty meats and other foods in winter into light meals and a mild and easily digestible ones, these foods include grains, fruits and vegetables.
Experts also believe that one of the easiest and most effective ways to withdraw accumulated substances in the body is doing exercise. And in spring, exercise should be proportionate and even more than exercises that you do in winter, but in spring one must avoid heavy physical activity. It is also important to drink plenty of water.
In Teb al-Reza, it is quoted from Imam Reza (A.S.) that “in the second month of spring, eat less meat and fats and eat foods which make you cool inside, drink plenty of water, take a  shower in the morning and be active and work.
Hunger is just as harmful and problematic as eating heavy meals in spring, being hungry has great disadvantages because it exacerbates allergies in people through accumulation of substances in their bodies.
Eat light meal in hot seasons and heavy meal in cold seasons
In Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 59, page 312, Imam Reza (A.S.) has said: “Eat light meal in hot seasons and heavy meal in cold seasons, in mild seasons like spring and autumn have meals which are neither too heavy nor too light”.
The foods such as barley soup, spinach soup, squash, barley, vetch and foods like Tamarind, black prune, barberry, pomegranate and quince sauce, cucumber, lemon, jujube, dried apricot and peach are the best foods for spring.
Spring is the best season for cleaning up the waste substances in the body. The remained body wastes influence the weak and susceptible body parts and cause various symptoms such as rash, pimple, painful abscess, nasal bleeding and continuous sneeze, one way to remove the accumulated waste substances in the body is phlebotomy.
Spring is the best season for phlebotomy
One of the Imam Reza’s (A.S.) important recommendations in Vasael al-Shiea on page 541, Volume 17 is about phlebotomy. Spring is the best time to take action and it is stated that: “in this season the blood flow pressure in vessels rise up, so in this season do phlebotomy and do not neglect to smell the flowers and the pleasant smell of spring”.
According to Oyoun Akhbar Al-Reza Imam Reza (A.S.) says that one should not neglect massage and smelling the scent of flowers in spring.  As previously mentioned, the benefits of smelling flowers, which have their origins in Heaven, according to some narratives, in this season are joy and happiness and curing some diseases such as stress and anxiety.
